πŸ’₯ Master Basic II V I Voicings in 4 StepsΒ

jazz harmony Jan 24, 2025

The II V I progression is at the heart of jazz. If you want to play jazz piano confidently, mastering this progression is non-negotiable. With 3rds, 7ths, and good voice-leading, you’ll be on your way to sounding like a pro. Here’s a 4-step process to get there.

Before You Start

  • Circle of 5ths: Understand root movement through the circle.
  • Key Signatures & Diatonic 7th Chords: Focus on II, V, and I in each key.
  • The Key is in the 7th: The 7th of the II chord indicates the key.

Step 1: Bass Notes Only

Practice root movements in all keys:

  • II → V (up a 4th)
  • II → V (down a 5th)

Run these exercises:

II up a 4th → V, down to I.
II down a 5th → V, up to I.
II down a 5th → V, down to I.

Step 2: 4-Note 7th Chords

Play root position 7th chords in parallel motion for II V I. Practice in every key to build confidence.

Step 3: 3rds & 7ths Only

Focus on the essential chord tones: 3rds and 7ths.

** Remember: The 7th of the II chord tells you the key. **

Step 4: 3rds & 7ths with Voice-Leading

Smooth voice-leading creates professional-sounding transitions.

Rules:

  • 3rd of II → 7th of V7 (note stays the same) → 3rd of I (note moves down a half step)
  • 7th of II → 3rd of V7 (note moves down a half step) → 7th of I (note stays the same)

Bonus Practice Progressions

Here are three ways to solidify these steps:

  1. Move down by key in whole steps.
  2. Move down by key in half steps.
  3. Work through the Circle of 5ths.

What’s Next?

Once you’ve nailed these steps, adding more notes to your 3rds and 7ths is the next challenge. Stay tuned for a video covering this very topic!

Happy practicing!
