Dec 18, 2024
As jazz pianists, we often get caught up in abstract concepts and complex ideas. Sometimes, it’s refreshing to focus on something concrete. Today, I’m sharing 4 beautiful, two-handed jazz piano voicings that will immediately improve your sound and expand your harmonic vocabulary.
These voicings are practical and versatile, perfect for adding richness to your playing. Whether a beginner or a more advanced player, these voicings will help elevate your jazz piano skills.
Tips for Faster Internalization
- Focus on the Top Note: Identify the top note’s relationship to the chord. This helps you harmonize melodies and comp more melodically.
- Learn Using Scale Numbers: Use scale numbers instead of chord names to better navigate voicings in any key. For example, a 6/9 chord from bottom to top is 3 5 6 9.
- Use the Circle of 4ths: Practice each voicing through the circle of 4ths to solidify it in all keys.
Bonus Practice Techniques
- Approach each chord a step below or two half steps above.
- Practice with a play-along track, using rhythms like the Charleston, or two rhythms at once.
- Practice these on staccato off-beats
